Alert(), alertcondition() or strategy alerts?Variety of possibilities offered by PineScript, especially thanks to recent additions, created some confusion. Especially one question repeats quite often - which method to use to trigger alerts?
I'm posting this to clarify and give some syntax examples. I'll discuss these 3 methods in chronological order, meaning - in the order they were introduced to PineScript.
ALERTCONDITION() - it is a function call, which can be used only in study-type script. Since years ago, you could create 2 types of a script: strategy and study. First one enables creating a backtest of a strategy. Second was to develop scripts which didn't require backtesting and could trigger alerts. alertcondition() calls in strategy-type scripts were rejected by Pine compiler. On the other hand compiling study-type scripts rejected all strategy...() calls. That created difficulties, because once you had a nice and backtested strategy, you had to rip it off from all strategy...() function calls to convert your script to study-type so you could produce alerts. Maintenance of two versions of each script was necessary and it was painful.
"STRATEGY ALERTS" were introduced because of alertcondition() pains. To create strategy alert, you need to click "Add alert" button inside Strategy Tester (backtester) and only there. Alerts set-up this way are bound with the backtester - whenever backtester triggers an order, which is visible on the chart, alert is also fired. And you can customize alert message using some placeholders like {{strategy.order.contracts}} or {{ticker}}.
ALERT() was added last. This is an alerts-triggering function call, which can be run from strategy-type script. Finally it is doable! You can connect it to any event coded in PineScript and generate any alert message you want, thanks to concatenation of strings and wrapping variables into tostring() function.
Out of these three alertcondition() is obviously archaic and probably will be discontinued. There is a chance this makes strategy/study distinction not making sense anymore, so I wouldn't be surprised if "studies" are deprecated at some point.
But what are the differences between "Strategy alerts" and alert()? "Strategy alerts" seem easier to set-up with just a few clicks and probably easier to understand and verify, because they go in sync with the backtester and on-chart trade markers. It is especially important to understand how they work if you're building strategy based on pending orders (stop and limit) - events in your code might trigger placing pending order, but alert will be triggered only (and when) such order is executed.
But "Strategy Alerts" have some limitations - not every variable you'd like to include in alert message is available from PineScript. And maybe you don't need the alert fired when the trade hit a stop-loss or take-profit, because you have already forwarded info about closing conditions in entry alert to your broker/exchange.
Alert() was added to PineScript to fill all these gaps. Is allows concatenating any alert message you want, with any variable you want inside it and you can attach alert() function at any event in your PineScript code. For example - when placing orders, crossing variables, exiting trades, but not explicitly at pending orders execution.
The Verdict
"Strategy Alerts" might seem a better fit - easier to set-up and verify, flexible and they fire only when a trade really happens, not producing unnecessary mess when each pending order is placed. But these advantages are illusionary, because they don't give you the full-control which is needed when trading with real money. Especially when using pending orders. If an alert is fired when price actually hit a stop-order or limit-order level, and even if you are executing such alert within 1 second thanks to a tool like TradingConnector, you might already be late and you are making entry at a market price. Slippage will play a great role here. You need to send ordering alert when logical conditions are met - then it will be executed at the price you want. Even if you need to cancel all the pending orders which were not executed. Because of that I strongly recommend sticking to ALERT() when building your alerts system.
Below is an example strategy, showing syntax to manage placing the orders and cancelling them. Yes, this is another spin-off from my TradingView Alerts to MT4 MT5 . As usual, please don't pay attention to backtest results, as this is educational script only.
P.S. For the last time - farewell alertcondition(). You served us well.

Fancy strategy alerts example [QuantNomad]Alerts on strategies were introduced just recently in TradingView.
These alerts have an alert_message placeholder which allows you to compose in PineScript very complex alerts and insert quite a lot of information in them.
This is just very simple example of how they can look like.
How to force strategies fire exit alerts not reversalsPineScript has gone a long way, from very simple and little-capable scripting language to a robust coding platform with reliable execution endpoints. However, this one small intuitivity glitch is still there and is likely to stay, because it is traditionally justified and quite intuitive for significant group of traders. I'm sharing this workaround in response to frequent inquiries about it.
What's the glitch? When setting alerts on strategies to be synchronized with TradingView's Strategy Tester events, using simple alert messages such as "buy" or "sell" based on entry direction seems straightforward by inserting {{strategy.order.action}} into the Create Alert's "Message" field. Because "buy" or "sell" are exactly the strings produced by {{strategy.order.action}} placeholder. However, complications arise when attempting to EXIT positions without reversing, whether triggered by price levels like Stop Loss or Take Profit, or logical conditions to close trades. Those bricks fall apart, because on such events {{strategy.order.action}} sends the same "sell" for exiting buy positions and "buy" for exiting sell positions, instead of something more differentiating like "closebuy" or "closesell". As a result reversal trades are opened, instead of simply closing the open ones.
This convention harkens back to traditional stock market practices, where traders either bought shares to enter positions or sold them to exit. However, modern trading encompasses diverse instruments like CFDs, indices, and Forex, alongside advanced features such as Stop Loss, reshaping the landscape. Despite these advancements, the traditional nomenclature persists.
And is poised to stay on TradingView as well, so we need a workaround to get a simple strategy going. Luckily it is here and is called alert_message . It is a parameter, which needs to be added into each strategy.entry() / strategy.exit() / strategy.close() function call - each call, which causes Strategy Tester to produce entry or exit orders. As in this example script:
line 12: strategy.entry(... alert_message ="buy")
line 14: strategy.entry(... alert_message ="sell")
line 19: strategy.exit(... alert_message ="closebuy")
line 20: strategy.exit(... alert_message ="closesell")
line 24: strategy.close(... alert_message ="closebuy")
line 26: strategy.close(... alert_message ="closesell")
These alert messages are compatible with the Alerts Syntax of TradingConnector - a tool facilitating auto-execution of TradingView alerts in MetaTrader 4 or 5. Yes, simple alert messages like "buy" / "sell" / "closebuy" / "closesell" suffice to carry the execution of simple strategy, without complex JSON files with multiple ids and such. Other parameters can be added (actually plenty), but they are only option and that's not a part of this story :)
Last thing left to do is to replace "Message" in Create Alert popup with {{strategy.order.alert_message}} . This placeholder transmits the string defined in the PineScript alert_message= parameter, as outlined in this publication. With this workaround, executing closing alerts becomes seamless within PineScript strategies on TradingView.

Manual Buy&Sell Alerts [Starbots]This is a simple Strategy created to help you manually execute open or close orders via Alerts on Exchanges or Platforms.
More and more Exchanges and Platforms allow Tradingview Alert trading and sometimes we come to a problem that we can not sell an open order on the exchanges other way than signaling a sell or buy from Tradingview Alerts.
This is a tool to solve that problem as your are able to manually:
- send alert on limit targets (Long limit target, Short limit target, Take Profit limit target, Stop Loss limit target)
- send alert when new live bar opens on the market (simple way for closing your open trades on the Exchange/Platform - it will sell your open Long/Short order after new live bar is opened on the market)
Functions:
- 🕛Start
Define a start time for strategy to open/close trades
- 🕐Stop Trading after your Order is Closed
If you wish to stop opening/closing trades after your first position is successfully closed keep this turned on. If you wish to keep opening/closing trades indefinitely when the conditions are met keep this turned off.
🏁Buy&Sell By Limit Target
-Buy Price
-Take Profit
-Stop Loss
-🟢Enable Long Limit Orders
-🔴Enable Short Limit Orders
If you enable Enable Long or Short limit orders you will be able to execute trades when the price reaches your limit target lines.
Please Note that if you turn on Shorting, your Take Profit limit target must be 'UNDER' your buy price and Stop Loss limit target must be 'ABOVE' your buy price.
Type in your limit values manually or re-apply the strategy to your chart to select limit targets again with a mouse - you can also drag the limit lines to your wanted areas.
(I recommend using low time-frame charts - 30s, 1minute for fast executions)
🏁Buy&Sell After New Bar Opens
-🟢Open Long
-Close Long on a new Open Bar
-🔴Open Short
-Close Short on a new Open Bar
This is a simple way for closing your open trade on Exchanges. If you select Open Long/Short and then Close Long/Short on a new Open bar it will sell your open order and send sell alert when the new bar is opened on the market. Choose your time-frame and execute immediate sell order when a new bar is opened. You can select low 15s-30s-1minute charts to quickly get a sell alert.
Alerts
Long Message
Short Message
Exit Long Message
Exit Short Message
You can type in your webhook alert messages in this inputs. Write this code in 'Message' when creating Alert for strategy to send your Buy/Sell messages from above inputs.
{{strategy.order.alert_message}}
If you trade on exchanges and use different dynamic alert message to trade from Strategies, then you can just leave Alert inputs empty and write down your message alert in 'Message' box when creating new alert normally.
>> Do not forget to also set order size and pyramiding in properties tab correctly in this case.
TradingView Alerts to MT4 MT5 - Forex, indices, commoditiesHowdy Algo-Traders! This example script has been created for educational purposes - to present how to use and automatically execute TradingView Alerts on real markets.
I'm posting this script today for a reason. TradingView has just released a new feature of the PineScript language - ALERT() function. Why is it important? It is finally possible to set alerts inside PineScript strategy-type script, without the need to convert the script into study-type. You may say triggering alerts straight from strategies was possible in PineScript before (since June 2020), but it had its limitations. Starting today you can attach alert to any custom event you might want to include in your PineScript code.
With the new feature, it is easier not only to execute strategies, but to maintain codebase - having to update 2 versions of the code with each single modification was... ahem... inconvenient. Moreover, the need to convert strategy into study also meant it was required to rip the code from all strategy...() calls, which carried a lot of useful information, like entry price, position size, and more, definitely influencing results calculated by strategy backtest. So the strategy without these features very likely produced different results than with them. While it was possible to convert these features into study with some advanced "coding gymnastics", it was also quite difficult to test whether those gymnastics didn't introduce serious, bankrupting bugs.
//////
How does this new feature work? It is really simple. On your custom events in the code like "GoLong" or "GoShort", create a string variable containing all the values you need inside your alert and this string variable will be your alert's message. Then, invoke brand new alert() function and that's it (see lines 67 onwards in the script). Set it up in CreateAlert popup and enjoy. Alerts will trigger on candle close as freq= parameter specifies. Detailed specification of the new alert() function can be found in TradingView's PineScript Reference (www.tradingview.com), but there's nothing more than message= and freq= parameters. Nothing else is needed, it is very simple. Yet powerful :)
//////
Alert syntax in this script is prepared to work with TradingConnector. Strategy here is not too complex, but also not the most basic one: it includes full exits, partial exits, stop-losses and it also utilizes dynamic variables calculated by the code (such as stop-loss price). This is only an example use case, because you could handle variety of other functionalities as well: conditional entries, pending entries, pyramiding, hedging, moving stop-loss to break-even, delivering alerts to multiple brokers and more.
//////
This script is a spin-off from my previous work, posted over a year ago here: Some comments on strategy parameters have been discussed there, but let me copy-paste most important points:
* Commission is taken into consideration.
* Slippage is intentionally left at 0. Due to shorter than 1 second delivery time of TradingConnector, slippage is practically non-existing.
* This strategy is NON-REPAINTING and uses NO TRAILING-STOP or any other feature known to be causing problems.
* The strategy was backtested on EURUSD 6h timeframe, will perform differently on other markets and timeframes.
Despite the fact this strategy seems to be still profitable, it is not guaranteed it will continue to perform well in the future. Remember the no.1 rule of backtesting - no matter how profitable and good looking a script is, it only tells about the past. There is zero guarantee the same strategy will get similar results in the future.

BollingerBands Strat + pending order alerts via TradingConnectorSoftware part of algotrading is simpler than you think. TradingView is a great place to do this actually. To present it, I'm publishing each of the default strategies you can find in Pinescript editor's "built-in" list with slight modification - I'm only adding 2 lines of code, which will trigger alerts, ready to be forwarded to your broker via TradingConnector and instantly executed there. Alerts added in this script: 14, 17, 20 and 23.
SCRIPT INCLUDES PENDING ORDERS AND ALERTS! Alert will be sent to MetaTrader when order is triggered, but not yet filled. That means if market conditions change and order does not get filled, it needs to be cancelled as well, and there are alerts for that in the script as well.
How it works:
1. TradingView alert fires.
2. TradingConnector catches it and forwards to MetaTrader4/5 you got from your broker.
3. Trade gets executed inside MetaTrader within 1 second of fired alert.
When configuring alert, make sure to select "alert() function calls only" in CreateAlert popup. One alert per ticker is required.
Adding stop-loss, take-profit, trailing-stop, break-even or executing pending orders is also possible. These topics have been covered in other example posts.
This routing works for Forex, indices, stocks, crypto - anything your broker offers via their MetaTrader4 or 5.

SuperTrend - Custom Screener and Dynamic AlertsTrading View today published a desktop Bad Internet connection indicator ?! which set me thinking…
Despite recently introduced Dynamic Alerts many scripts do not leverage the information available for active traders and traders on the GO!
So decided to share this script totally ALERT focused on one of the most popular DAY trading indicators.
Of course no more BAD internet problem as long your TV APP is configured , you will have enough data for a mental picture of the chart..
The Alerts give you the BAR Close , %percent gain or loss over previous day CLOSE ++ Previous Day High and Low to effectively plan your trade without a chart!(just in case)
2 additions in the way Alerts are delivered over the last script :
1. You get SUMMARY alerts or concatenated alerts by default , however if you uncomment or activate code lines 48 and 55 you will get individual Stock alerts Too!
2. Summary Alerts will come only if there is some Buy or Sell signal NO more empty Alerts!
Few useful EXTRAS in the code :
1. Flexible code can convert any indicator to screener or Alert function.
2. You will NOT get Mutable Variable error while converting any indicator to screener as long as the function is in "GLOBAL" scope..
3. Many Custom Screeners are available but few give OHLC data in output so easily…and very difficult for traders to MODIFY hundreds of lines of code..
4. For UP or DOWN on SCREEN Stock monitoring copy /paste functions in line 41 and 42 in lieu of CROSS functions in 44 and 51 respectively..
5. You can also uncomment/activate lines 66 and 67 for labels in monitoring.
6. The default mode of the scripts is set to Alerts!
Max Stocks only 20!
Finally idea is to help traders to use the great features that TV works so hard to create and constantly improvise.
Enjoy Profitable Trading on the Fly !!

MA Cross - ***Programmers*** Please help with alertcondition() Hello Traders and coders,
Here is a fundamental version of a moving average cross trading strategy that works on 1H and 4H timeframes.
It's very simple and would be well paired with proper technical analysis and risk management.
I am looking to use this to alert me of potential setups. I could not get the alertcondition function to work properly. If anyone can help me with that please comment or message me.
Moving Stop-Loss mechanism + alerts to MT4/MT5"How to code moving stop-loss mechanism", is one of the most often repeating questions in private messages I receive, so just to focus on this mechanism, I made a spin-off from my previous script: TradingView-Alerts-to-MT4-MT5-dynamic-variables-NON-REPAINTING .
The logic here moves the stop-loss each time a trade is running and a new pivot high/low is detected. When such event occurs (UpdateLongStopLoss or UpdateShortStopLoss), stoploss_long or stoploss_short mutable variable is modified. And it needs to be coded inside strategy.exit() line as "stop=stoploss_long" or "stop=stoploss_short". Entries are pretty straightforward - on Stoch crosses.
Last lines of the script show how to wrap information about such updates and send send alerts to MetaTrader via TradingConnector for execution in Forex/indices/commodities/crypto markets via MetaTrader. Please note that "tradeid=" variable must be passed with each alert, to let MetaTrader know which trade to modify. SLMOD, TPMOD are recently added commands, along with BE (as in "move stop-loss to breakeven" - but that's another topic).
Please disregard strategy backtest results, as this script is for coding education purposes only. However, it seems with the stop-loss mechanism enabled, the results are even better, than in original version of the script :)
Trend Surfers - Premium Breakout + AlertsTrend Surfers - Premium Breakout Strategy with Alerts
I am happy today to release the first free Trend Surfers complete Breakout Strategy!
The strategy includes:
Entry for Long and Short
Stoploss
Position Size
Exit Signal
Risk Management Feature
How the strategy works
This is a Trend Following strategy. The strategy will have drawdowns, but they will be way smaller than what you would go through with buy and old.
As a Trend Following strategy, we will buy on strength, when a breakout occurs. And sell on weakness.
The strategy includes a FIX Stoploss determined by an ATR multiple and a trailing Stoploss/Takeprofit also determined by an ATR multiple.
You can also manage your risk by entering the maximum % you are willing to risk on every trade. Additionally, there is an option to enter how many pairs you will be trading with the strategy. This will change your position size in order to make sure that you have enough funds to trade all your favorite pairs.
Use the strategy with alerts
This strategy is alert-ready. All you have to do is:
Go on a pair you would like to trade
Create an alert
Select the strategy as a Trigger
Wait for new orders to be sent to you
Every Entry (Long/Short) will include:
Market Entry (Enter position NOW!)
Stoploss price
Position Size
Leverage
* If you do not wish to use leverage, you can multiply the Position Size by the Leverage. But doing that, you might end up with a position greater than your equity. Trading on Futures is better in order to have accurate risk management.
Exit signals:
When you receive an exit signal, you need to close the position ASAP. If you want to keep your results as close as possible to the backtest results, you need to execute quickly and follow what the strategy is telling you.
Do not try to outsmart the strategy
Leave your emotion out of trading! If you trust the strategy, you will have way better returns than if you try to outsmart it. Follow each signal you receive even if it doesn't seem logical at the moment.
Become a machine that executes. Don't look at fundamentals. Follow the trend! Trust the strategy!
I hope you enjoy it!
[NLX] Trading Engine (Backtest+Alerts) [Beta]This is a different version of my backtest module, which will be a fully featured alert and backtest tool.
The new strategy alerts will be integrated so we don't require 2 different scripts anymore. All in one.
There are no stop mechanism in this version. The entry and exit signal has to come from your indicator (you can set the signal values yourself).
It also integrates a ProfitView Alert Builder. This is an early beta and the alerts are not working yet!
Stay tuned for more updates!

MACD with Support and Resistance - Signals, Alerts, TP and SLMACD with Support and Resistance - Signals Alerts SL and TP by Tech Store On
The script uses MACD for entering/exiting trades and support/resistance lines to take TP1 (take profit 1). Both MACD and support/resistance lines are fully configurable to your preference, and you can back-test it via TradingView. Once TP1 is taken, you can either set the indicator to close the trade at the end of the US trading session day (4PM ET) or you can continue taking partial profits where you wish or just wait until reversal signal alert.
For example: If you will be day trading SPY and you wish to close your positions no matter what right before the market closes (3:45PM ET > 15min before closes): Make sure to checkbox “Intraday – Close Position Before Market Closes” in the strategy/indicator Settings, so that you are alerted soon before the market closes, if you wish to continue holding the position – leave this checkbox unchecked.
SL: SL is set to be slightly above/below the MACD signal candle, which is best suited for this strategy from manual backtesting.
Strategy Take Profit Approach
While the initial position open and SL hit is always based on a closed candle bar (can’t do otherwise, as otherwise you will have 10s of fake signal alerts), there are 2 ways on trading this strategy in terms of TP1 / TP1 taken > back to Entry, which is based off Alert type.
You can switch this as you like within the indicator settings, “Checked: TP1/TP1 taken > back to Entry per Price Touch | Unchecked: per Candle Close”.
Candle Close vs Price Touch: with the Default method - Candle Close for an alert for TP1 or if price comes back to Entry after TP1 is taken will only be triggered once candle bar fully closes crossing the area, while Price Touch will alert when price touches the area before candle bar closes.
For example: your trade is running well, you grab TP1 and the price reverses and hits your trade Entry area. With Price Touch – you are immediately alerted to close your trade with no loss and with TP1 profit. With Candle Close - you will receive an alert only once candle bar fully closes on top of the Entry crossing it backwards, meaning it may lower your TP1 profit or even completely reverse the trade into loss in case it will be a huge candle bar for any reason. However, it may touch the Entry area, looking like the price is reversing, but then continue per initial trade direction, sometimes becoming a trend. So, while Price Touch seem like a more conservative approach, Candle Close can give you much bigger profits if you catch a trend, but you can always change it via the Settings.
Note: TradingView back-testing engine does not have a feature to open/close orders IMMEDIATELY via Price Touch trigger, but only when the candle closes after price touches the scripted area/line/etc., so you for the most accurate results, test your strategy out via Candle Close setting. Otherwise, decide yourself. I personally like more Candle Close since I can test it out via back-testing with the most accurate results.
Note: If you will be observing the strategy LIVE, during LIVE candle bar movement – it will look weird, like it’s placing an order after order during any trigger – this seem like a TradingView bug, but is only observational, once the candle bar is closed and you refresh TradingView it will all look correct.
Back-Testing
If you wish to do some back-testing, just modify the strategy/indicator Settings:
-----1) STRATEGY: This is for back-testing/experimenting with the script inputs.
----------a. You can setup a start date (date, month, year) from which it will start opening back-test trades, select a position size and select TP1 size, the idea here is to close half (or whatever you choose) portion of the trade once you hit your TP1, then to either close at small profit or to catch a trend and close the second portion of the position long way ahead from Entry, otherwise it will alert you to close the position if price comes back to Entry, at reversal signal or at the end of US trading session if the option for it is checked. If you wish to close the whole position at TP1, just enter the same amount for TP1 to match backtest position size. Otherwise you can experiment with TP1 sizing – try it out!
-----2) Feel free to experiment with MACD settings and with S&R Left/Right bars, you may be amazed how results will differ and find some really cool combinations!
-----3) Make sure you select/de-select “Intraday – Close Position Before Market Closes” setting depending on what you are back-testing and on which conditions
-----4) Note: If you wish to do some deep back-testing (1+ years), use the “Deep Backtesting” feature within Strategy Tester on the TradingView as otherwise it may show wrong results or even fail to compute the results
Add the alerts
-----Right-click anywhere on the TradingView chart
-----Click on Add alert
-----Condition: MACD with Support and Resistance - Signals
----------o Right underneath the condition click on the drop-down menu and select “alert() function calls only”
-----Expiration time: Whatever you wish
-----Alert actions: Whatever notifications you wish
-----Alert name: DO NOT TOUCH THIS
-----Hit “Create”
-----Note: If you change ANY Settings within the indicator – you must DELETE the current alert and create a new one per steps above, otherwise it will continue triggering alerts per old Settings!
- Note: If you add the alert while the script is currently “In Position” it will not know that. So either wait when there will be no position open at all or close your position partially if the bot opens it twice bigger or so in case per script the bot will think it is already in position.
Note: Because of the slippage and the order processing time between TradingView, AutoView and the Broker (it’s usually about a second or so), it is suggested to not use a timeframe lower than 1min. The script is working really well with 15M/H1 timeframes per my back-testing, but feel free to explore via Strategy Back-testing what’s best for the instrument you wish to trade.
